“Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the liturgy of the word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the eucharistic liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.” —Directory for Masses with Children, #17
What is the Children’s Liturgy of the Word? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is based on the scripture readings for each Sunday and includes a brief opening prayer, a child-friendly presentation based on that Sunday’s scriptures, a participatory activity and the recitation of the Nicene Creed (via song).
At what Mass is the Children’s Liturgy of the Word held? The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is held every Sunday, at the 9 AM Mass.
What age must the children be to attend? We have three groups: The Little Lambs: Kindergarten and under The Followers: Grades 1-3 The Young Disciples: Grades 4-6
How does the program work? After the opening prayers of the Mass, the priest invites the children and parents to come forward to the front of the church to receive a blessing and then proceed to the Parish Center, where the program is held. The children return to the church in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Who coordinates the program? The program is coordinated and led by members of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry and other volunteers.
How can I help? An in-depth understanding of each week’s scripture as well as presentation ideas are provided. We welcome more adults and teens who would like to assist with the program in any of the following areas,
• Planning and presenting a session. • Assisting the presenter with a session.
Who can I contact for more information? Please contact Andreja Mezek at 202-362-3323 x 13, or [email protected].
